MOSAIC POTS

Materials

Terracotta pot,

Terracotta pot sealer,

Pre cut tiles,

Adhesive (Liquid nails) or a cement based adhesive

Pop stick and adhesive tray,

Shells, beads, or any decoration you like

Glass tile cutter, grout, sponge, water and rags

1/ Seal the pot inside and out with terracotta pot sealer.

2/ Mark the rim into four equal parts then mark the bottom of the pot into four equal parts.  This will give you a guide for placing the tiles.

3/ Start with the rim and choose a design.   Diamond pattern with triangles to fill the gaps sets off the design. Place tiles with small gaps, just wide enough to fit a pop stick between, for the grout. Cut the square tiles across to form a diamond shape.

4/ For the body of the pot choose a design. If you are doing lines of vertical tiles use your marker to keep the lines of tiles straight.

Note you will need more space between the tiles at the top and gradually get smaller as you reach the bottom.  Alternatively, you can go around the pot in rows brick style and change the grout spaces with each row.

Allow 24 hours for the adhesive to cure. Remove any excess adhesive prior to grouting; this is to ensure that no adhesive shows through the grout.

Mix grout with water to a consistency of toothpaste.

Leave to rest for 5 minutes.

Apply to the pot with a dry sponge filling all the grout spaces.

Try not to go over and over too much.

Leave for 10 minutes and then gently wipe excess grout off with a slightly damp sponge. Take care not to remove grout from between the tiles. You should still see dried grout on the tile which can be cleaned off with a rag gently.

Last step when grout is completely dry, clean up and polish with vinegar and a toothbrush.
