"Cala Munnda" MAANZ WA Exhibition A Home in the Forest Wednesday 1 to Sunday 19 March 2023. 9am to 4pm each day Zig Zag Gallery 50 Railway Road, Kalamunda. Destruction of the Forest: Artist - Janet Gray The frame of this work is a significant inspiration for this mosaic. The beautiful jarrah wood has deteriorated just as our forests are in decline. Within the fame is an expansion of the story, once again the ancient forests, rare animals and plants are endangered, a significant reminder of the state of our environment | ![]() |

'NARAYANA' meaning SEA AND MAN.

Inspired by the stingrays of Southwestern Australia. These elegant creatures, considered to be a symbol of power, by the indigenous people, have graced our waters for millions of years.
After winning an emerging artist award at 2023 Sculptures by the Bay. I somehow thought it would be a good idea to make a sculpture from scratch. After spending some time drawing up a design, I was lucky to find Bert Jansen a local welding magician. Bert worked with me to create a steel frame of the stingray that would demonstrate its graceful swimming action.
I then covered the frame in 3 layers of reinforced mesh and Dome cement. I had an idea for the top in flowing shades of blue, as usual the design evolved as I progressed.
I selected a mother of pearl mosaic tile for the underside and reobar for the tail.
Narayana has been accepted into 2024 Sculptures by the Bay.
Sculptures By The Bay
Saturday 4 to Monday 6 March 2023
Over three days each March long weekend the Dunsborough foreshore at the end of Dunbay Road is transformed into a visual outdoor sculpture exhibition.
Janet has created "Mirren" the "lifesize" mermaid which will be on display.
GREAT NEWS, GREAT NEWS: Janet has won third prize in the "Emerging Artist" section of exhibition.
The Ancient Greco Roman mosaic artist often depicted mythological creatures. “Mirren” is a 3D sculptural collusion of this ancient art form. Mermaid myths are mirrored with marine colours and found objects. Intricate tile patterning represent ‘Mirren’s scales on an armature of plaster, cement, wire. ‘Mirren’s pose reflects our contemporary beach culture.
